Trigger warning: suicide, neglect of prisoners. The linked article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch has more details of Ms. Jones’ death.
An inmate at the Richmond City Jail, 19 year old Katrina Jones, was placed in isolation after a suicide attempt, apparently because the jail’s mental health professionals deemed her not at risk for self-harm. She was discovered unconscious some time later as the result of another, identical suicide attempt, and died in the hospital a week later. She taken off life support without the consent of her family; the sheriff’s department reports that they don’t know who made the decision.
Several organizations are meeting at the Bainbridge Collective (1300 Bainbridge Avenue in Southside) this Saturday at 5pm, to discuss a response and plan actions.
