To summarize (title link is to an article from RVA Magazine which explains in more detail), Katrina Jones was a nineteen year old who died as a result of negligence at the Richmond City Jail. Although she had expressed suicide threats to the guards, they put her in solitary with insufficient monitoring, and she indeed attempted suicide by the means she’d said she would. She was found comatose, and transported to the hospital where, several days later, the Sheriff’s department took her off of life support without the knowledge or consent of her family. The article contains some good analysis on the conditions of our jail, and the mortality of our prisoners, as compared to national averages. We don’t measure up well.
Please RSVP here, at the Facebook event page.
Strange Matter is accessible, and has non-sex-specific bathroom facilities. There are also ample vegan and vegetarian options on the menu.
