The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is gearing up for a strike. Work stoppage is slated to begin on October 1st. This strike would affect fourteen ports, from Maine to Texas, although the title link concentrates only on the reactions of the Virginia Port Authority.
Most news outlets are reporting from the perspectives of the port, and most trade publications are concerned with where ocean carriers will divert their cargo to; there is very limited information available on how the contract discussion broke down and what concessions the ILA is looking for.
The ILA has five local chapters in Virginia, mostly in Norfolk. Here is their website.
