Tomorrow, May 23rd, from 11am-12pm, outside of the Virginia Republican Convention at the corner of East Broad and North 5th Street in front of the valet stand of the Marriott Hotel, there will be a multi-group protest against the Republican nominee to run for Lieutenant Governor, Reverend E.W Jackson.
Jackson subscribes to the notion of abortion as genocide of black babies, and has described abortion providers as “worse than the KKK”.
While Virginia in particular has a very real history of involuntarily sterilizing women of color and inflicting other programs of eugenics, the abortion as black genocide argument primarily contends that most or all abortions are coerced, which is untrue. The other major line in this theory is that black women have a racial responsibility to produce black children, especially black male children, regardless of individual circumstance or desire to do so. The problem in that line of reasoning is also evident. For a better analysis, see this essay, “Trust Black Women,” by Loretta Ross of SisterSong.
Jackson is in good company- Ken Cuccinelli essentially wrote the TRAP regulations which are poised to shut down nearly every Virginia reproductive health clinic, and the nominee for Attorney General, Mark Obenshain, authored a bill to require all miscarriages to be reported to the police within a certain number of hours.
