Vigil to say "No Stadium in Shockoe Bottom":

Tomorrow, Wednesday June 19th, at 5pm, at the corner of 17th and East Broad Streets, there will be a rally against the proposed baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom.

Shockoe Bottom is one of the most important sites of black history in North America- if the city wants to devise a point of interest for visitors, it should develop that history, not build another ball park at the taxpayer’s expense.

A neo-Nazi, white power blog started following Active-RVA today. There are really only two reasons why they might have done this: because they wanted to troll, or because they were scoping out events to infiltrate or disrupt.

I have no way of knowing which scenario was the correct one, and I don’t know if the man running the blog is local to Richmond. I blocked him (rendered his account unable to see this account’s posts in his feed and unable to contact this account directly) within about an hour of his signing on to follow the account, but he could easily get around that by viewing the blog while not logged in, or while logged into another account. There is no way to prevent him from seeing the blog if he wants to see it.

In the interest of caution, here are some pictures which I discovered on his other Nazi blog, stated to be of himself. If you see this man at your events, use caution and throw him out.

Remember that publicly posted events (on a Tumblr or using the “Public” setting on Facebook) are visible to everyone.

The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) is again partnering with the USDA’s Summer Meals for Kids Program. This free program provides children and teens (up to 18 years old) with nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners during the summer months…

“Even if your child does not participate in one of the City’s PRCF summer camps, your child can still participate in the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Program. Walk-ins during meal times are always welcome. For a list of locations, please click here.

Currently, we have 119 sites registered for the 2013 Summer Meals for Kids Program. New locations are welcomed and those interested should call (804) 646-5698 for more information.”

Youth, parents, and caregivers, check out the locations (most are in Richmond, but there are some in Chesterfield, Hopewell, etc) you can go to receive free meals.

“Dear Richmond,

On Sunday June 30th, at 2pm, at the corner of Main and Belvidere Streets in Monroe Park, Richmond Food Not Bombs is hosting an alternative Independence Day cookout. You and your organizations are invited. Rather than celebrating the creation of the United States of America, we will be coming together to celebrate our vision of a world free of war and militarism- a dream which is unfortunately in conflict with current American politics.

Food Not Bombs is an international organization consisting of loosely associated chapters, unified by anti-capitalism, anti-militarism, and the conviction that food is a human right, not a privilege. We sort, salvage, and cook remaindered (discarded) grocery store food every Sunday, then serve a free vegan dinner at 4pm at the corner of Main and Belvidere Streets in Monroe Park. Anyone is free to cook and eat with us.

This will be a sober, all-ages, free, and pet friendly event. The park is wheelchair accessible. Food Not Bombs will provide, in addition to the usual free meal, vegan food for grilling, ice-cold beverages, some grills and grill equipment, water bowls for dogs, fun activities for kids, and fire marshals to ensure a safe grilling experience. We encourage you to bring any or all of the following:

- A table with information and materials for your organization

- Non-alcoholic beverages

- A cooler of treats to share

- Food to grill

- Your own grill

- Charcoal, lighter fluid, and matches

- Lawn chairs

- Banners

- Fun stuff, like sidewalk chalk, frisbees, hula hoops, face paint, or bean bag games.

Friday June 21st, from 12-4pm, on the James River Terrace of the VCU Monroe Park Campus Student Commons (907 Floyd Avenue, Richmond VA), Active-RVA is holding our second Accessibility and Bathroom Survey Workday.

We’re conducting an accessibility survey for Richmond’s restaurants- we’ll be determining whether a venue is wheelchair accessible, has wheelchair accessible bathrooms, has sex non-specific, unisex, or single-stall bathrooms, and is friendly to service animals. Then we’ll list the answers in a user-friendly spreadsheet, to be made public upon its completion.

Thursday July 18th, from 7:30-9:30pm, at the Carmike 10 Theatre (1100 Alverser Drive, Midlothian, VA, 23113), Camp Diva presents a screening of Free Angela, a documentary on Angela Davis. Dr. Shawn Utsey, of the VCU African American Studies Department, will give the introduction. Advance tickets only ($12), none sold at the door. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit Camp Diva, which works to empower girls.

Camp Diva is a local non-profit which works to empower girls. They hold a camp and a conference each year, and have done work to facilitate father-daughter connection between daughters and their incarcerated fathers. You can follow them on Facebook.

We are also working to open a “kitten nursery” at our humane center where volunteers will provide day care enabling foster care providers to leave their foster kittens to be cared for during the work day. This will make fostering more convenient for those who work regular business hours. The following items are needed to set up the nursery so it can be ready to open on April 30.
