To summarize (title link is to an article from RVA Magazine which explains in more detail), Katrina Jones was a nineteen year old who died as a result of negligence at the Richmond City Jail. Although she had expressed suicide threats to the guards, they put her in solitary with insufficient monitoring, and she indeed attempted suicide by the means she’d said she would. She was found comatose, and transported to the hospital where, several days later, the Sheriff’s department took her off of life support without the knowledge or consent of her family. The article contains some good analysis on the conditions of our jail, and the mortality of our prisoners, as compared to national averages. We don’t measure up well.
Please RSVP here, at the Facebook event page.
Strange Matter is accessible, and has non-sex-specific bathroom facilities. There are also ample vegan and vegetarian options on the menu.
Trigger warning: suicide, neglect of prisoners. The linked article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch has more details of Ms. Jones’ death.
An inmate at the Richmond City Jail, 19 year old Katrina Jones, was placed in isolation after a suicide attempt, apparently because the jail’s mental health professionals deemed her not at risk for self-harm. She was discovered unconscious some time later as the result of another, identical suicide attempt, and died in the hospital a week later. She taken off life support without the consent of her family; the sheriff’s department reports that they don’t know who made the decision.
Several organizations are meeting at the Bainbridge Collective (1300 Bainbridge Avenue in Southside) this Saturday at 5pm, to discuss a response and plan actions.
Emergency meeting to organize around Richmond City Jail’s mental health policies, regulations, and neglect (re: Katrina Jones) scheduled for Friday July 13 at 7:30pm.

I saw this list of crisis hotlines on my dash today, and realized that, while very helpful, I don’t usually call a number without knowing exactly what organization it is. I thought that there are probably other people who feel the same way, so I dug around and found out who runs each hotline, and if they have resources in addition to the phone number. I ended up adding some extras that I found in my search, and reformatting by category to keep it all neat. I also included a crisis line specific to my city, so you can either leave that in if you’re from RVA, or omit it (along with all my talking, I assume) when you reblog.
I found something cool when I Googled each number, though: in some cases, the first several pages of results were all Tumblr reblogs. Good job, everybody!
